The interesting thing for those of us coming out of some fearful Fundamentalism is that we need to have our eyes open about what we have come into as well. Or else our kids may be writing books about the folly we embraced and how it hurt them. After all, our parents were reacting to something when they embraced Fundamentalism. The pendulum swings.

I admire my parents, because they have grown in and out of some of these trendy phases. I remember my dad being a big fan of your grandfather, and I remember watching him transform into a man of more biblical understanding over time to where he now has a very different view. My folks have matured and are now less likely to be taken in by the latest overreaction to the last overreaction. May we all be so.

Pamela, I live in Nashville, so I'm only about 30 minutes away from the Sword of the Lord headquarters and the ranch. So yes, I do make it down that way from time to time. I visited the Sword about 6 months ago to see John R. Rice's office, which is set up as a museum. And after my great-grandmother died back in '90 and the farmland was sold, we moved the Rice home onto a corner of the Ranch property, and set it up as a museum. I believe it's open to the public, if you're ever down in this part of the country.

Wow! Sounds like we have similar backgrounds and the same taste in books. I too love memoirs and have Girl Meets God, Born Again and Again, Leaving Church, and Soul Survivor on my bookshelf. Along with a few others along the same line. I am eagerly awaiting MPT's Churched.
It's not often someone really really gets it - you have to have a very similar background to really relate to this. Thanks for your good review and I'm glad to find another like minded countryman on this crazy and necessary journey.

I'll be checking your blog often!

Hi, Stephen. My Dad went to work for The Sword of the Lord when I was 4 yrs old...imagine my surprise to read the John R. Rice is your great Grandfather! I was in the first Kindergarten class of Franklin Road Christian School, too!

I know when my now husband and I began dating in high school, my parents and other family were upset that he was not Baptist...I was being unequally yoked! My Mom, to this day, feels that I turned my back on God but the funny thing is that my oldest daughter is the student president of the Christian club in her public high school of about 2200 students!

I can't wait to get Churched...it comes out on my sister's birthday and I so plan on that being her present!

So, tell me, have you been out to the farm lately, or for that matter your Uncle's ranch???
Thanks for the awesome review...I will be purchasing this book!
