The problem with Nashville…

Posted on Sunday 13 July 2008

…is that there is too much good music here. Last night I caught a show by a friend, Aaron Long, before we headed over to see Hellboy II: The Golden Army with Andrew Peterson and a couple other friends. Tonight, JJ and Dave Heller played a show, with harpist Megan Metheney, at 12 South. About two years ago, just after I moved to town, I went to a show JJ and Dave played at the same venue with Andrew Osenga and Matthew Perryman Jones, when they were in town house-hunting, and they’ve since become good friends. They’re heading back into the studio on Monday to record their next album, which will then be available for free on their website for about 10 weeks before it hits stores. You can follow their progress on JJ’s blog. Anyway, after their show, where they played a lot of new songs, we headed over to the Exit/In to hear Paper Route. They put on a great rock show, with a good mix of programmed stuff complimenting the live band.

And then tomorrow night at 3rd and Lyndsley, the show I’ve really been looking forward to – Sixpence None the Richer with Matthew Perryman Jones opening for them. It’s a benefit show for Blood:Water Mission. The Ride:Well bike tour is passing through Nashville this weekend, so they’ll be at the show as well, including author Don Miller.

As I said, there’s too much good music here. Because of those shows, I had to miss hearing Pat Coil, my favorite jazz pianist in town, who was playing a gig last night at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. And today he was a part of the Watertown Jazz Festival, about 40 minutes outside of Nashville, that I would have been at if not for JJ’s concert. Oh well, there’s always next week. That’s the great thing about Nashville, Music City USA.

Hey, I’ll see you tonight, then. :) Want me to save you a seat? Since I’m driving up, I plan on getting there around 5 so I have good seats.

Oh boo-hoo. I’m just crying for ya, man. (As I hold back a fit of jealously.)
