Sixpence None the Richer

Last night, I had the good fortune to be at the packed Sixpence None the Richer show at 3rd and Lindsley here in Nashville. After a four year hiatus, Sixpence is making music together again. I think this show was their 3rd show back.

The lineup features, of course, Matt Slocum and Leigh Nash as the core. Justin Carry is back as the bass player and the only other returning member. Andrew Osenga reported last week that Will Sayles and Cason Cooley would be playing drums and keys, respectively (Cason was in The Normals with AO, and Cason and Will have played with each other a good bit recently, for artists like Derek Webb and Mat Kearney), and Kate York announced a while back on her myspace page that she would be singing background vocals, which she did on 3 songs. The one collaborator I hadn’t heard about before the concert was longtime Slocum collaborator Sam Ashworth (son of Charlie Peacock) on acoustic guitar (Matt played electric guitar, except for one song). Matt and Sam were in a band together after Sixpence split up 4 years ago, The Astronaut Pushers, and they’ve co-written some Sixpence songs in the past.

Here’s the setlist (thanks to my friend Chad who helped me with the titles):

Between the Lines
There She Goes
Don’t See Why
My Dear Machine (new, and on their myspace page)
Breathe Your Name
Kiss Me
A Million Parachutes
Down and Out of Time
Melody of You
Amazing Grace (new, and not based on the hymn)
Sooner Than Later (new)
Eyes Wide Open
Ocean Size Love

According to an interview with StereoSubversion that will be posted later this week, the new EP should be out in five or six weeks and will be iTunes only. A Christmas album, with Steve Hindalong (City on a Hill), will be out by this Christmas, and then a full-length album sometime next year. They’re working on booking a tour now, so check their website for dates near you. This was my first Sixpence concert to attend, and I think Leigh’s voice sounds even better live.

Check out Andrew Osenga’s blog for another post about the concert last night.

One Response to Sixpence None the Richer

  1. Joel says:

“Do Me a Favor” is actually called “Sooner Than Later” (a demo of it was up on their myspace page for a few days).

Thanks for this report. I just downloaded a recording of the concert and I’m impressed. I’m always worried that Leigh is going to miss some of the high notes, but she sounded really, really solid.
