I've read most of his older stuff. I quit when I got halfway through high school and realized that I didn't enjoy it. I read Salem's Lot, Carrie, Firestarter, It, and a bunch of other ones. I guess what I didn't like most was that reading King was like eating bland cotton candy. You can barely chew on it, it mushes around, and disappears. Not only did I not learn and grow in any way reading his work, his characters don't even learn or grow! Stuff just happens. That's all. Which I think he admits to by not having a plot. I'll leave the door open to the possibility that my dislike for King is little more than snobbery, but I still think my character development argument is a little hard to rebut.

What Stephen King books have you read, Cach? I just recently read On Writing, and thought it was great. The only other book of his I've read is From a Buick 8. My brother received it as a Christmas present three years ago, and I picked it up the next morning and didn't put it down (except to eat) until that evening when I finshed it, all 368 pages. So I really like what I have read. What specifically don't you like about his writing?

I'm not sure I took away all the same stuff from that King quote that you did. I think it might be the conclusive proof that I've been searching for that Stephen King is a terrible writer. I mean, he's a really terrible writer. But that's not the point here. I don't mind a designed plot; I do mind a badly designed plot. And the vast majority of Christian fiction is insulting, amoral, and sucky. (Can I say sucky? Is that a word?) The plot you summaraized sounds amoral and full of bad theology. So God kills inconvenient spouses? I guess this kind of writing targets the coveted "women who wish their husbands were dead" demographic. Ew.
